Administration Reveals Federal Worker Layoffs as Shutdown Approaches Three-Week Mark
Administration officials confirmed the start of government employee layoffs on Friday, making good on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third straight week.
Official Announcement and Initial Details
Russell Vought posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s procedure for terminating staff.
Although the official provided no details on which agencies were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that notices had been distributed within that agency. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security representative noted that layoffs would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers confirmed that members at the Department of Education would be impacted by the staff cuts.
Labor Reaction and Court Actions
Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on services used by millions of Americans and pledged to contest the actions in the legal system.
“It is disgraceful that the administration has used the government shutdown as an pretext to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who deliver critical services to communities across the country,” said a national union president, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.
The largest labor federation in the US responded to the news, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”
Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute
Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to support a GOP-supported bill to reopen the government unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the deadlock is not expected to be ended before then.
During a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, criticized Senate Democrats for not supporting the Republican proposal, which passed in the House on a largely partisan basis.
Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to do their job and end the shutdown,” the speaker stated. “Starting next week, American service members, who often live on tight budgets, are going to miss a complete payment.”
Judicial and Practical Limits
Last week, labor groups sought a temporary restraining order to block the administration from implementing any reductions in force during the shutdown. Additionally, a federal judge ordered the government to provide specifics on termination strategies, affected agencies, and if any government staff had been recalled to carry out layoffs.
An analysis contended that a funding lapse limits the authority of the administration to carry out firings, referencing official advice that acknowledged any long-term staff cuts need to have been started before the shutdown began.
Impact on Workers
The layoffs took place on the very day that federal workers received only a partial paycheck for the final days of September but excluding the beginning of the current month, since funding expired at the start of the month.
Max Stier, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, criticized the gridlock’s impact on federal employees.
This is unjust to make federal employees suffer because our elected officials in the legislature and the White House have not succeeded to keep our government running,” the advocate said. The air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not responsible for this government shutdown.”
A notable point is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are continuing to be paid amid the shutdown.
