As any significant honors show draws close, one notices a clamor for the addition of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.
My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category in 2014
- Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
- Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
